a fable.
intriguing. that would be the least you can say about tigran hamasyan. the 24 year old pianist from armenia manages to meet just the right balance between complexity and music tension.
this video was produced by mathieu mastin for kidam and their jazzed out series in paris. you might know it actually, probably the maybe the new york edition that is - it featured a lot of great musicians like...

pressure.
just recently I came across a noticeable jazz trio from up north. splashgirl combine vibrant and colourful jazz music with distinct field recordings, electronic and acoustic sounds and patterns - and just the right susceptibility for a well-balanced mix of all that. their music alters between thouroughly composed ensemble pieces and massive and rather obfuscating noise sculptures, between...

iron.
well, i guess it’s a classic by now - and that’s not by chance. i just had to feature this brilliant video here… (i know, it’s been around some time. so, if you know it already, just watch it again :) responsible for this stunning piece of art is of course woodkid, formally known as yoanne lemoine.
all-star lemoine, aged 28, is a well-known producer, photographer,...

...and replace skin with waves.
I carefully rearranged my senses so they could have a conversation. Taught them to switch places; from each pore in my skin grew shimmering eye!s And fingerprints filled the eye sockets.
- Blood Flight.
yep, its been a while - but let’s not get into that. after piling and hoarding ideas, music, and all kinds of fascinating and wonderful stuff during the past months, i figured its...

night air has the strangest flavor.
woon, jamie. 27. london. musician.
and a good one! after a tiny but beautiful little release in 2007 on live recordings featuring the likes of burial and stitch who contributed two rather groovy points of view to jamie’s bluesy and soulful acoustic tunes and a first signal of life with his really catchy 2009 collab solidify (together with subeena and om’mas keith) jamie woon now...

music for scenes and places.
i suppose you know the dark. and if you can wrap it up into sounds and music, there is one guy who mastered this. the results are terrifying, gloomy and yet strangely beautiful sounds, amazingly louring and fascinating. the man who is in charge of all that goes by the name of erik k. skodvin. he is from oslo, norway and you might have come across him and his duo project deaf center. well, apart...

the explorers club.
i admit, i’m a little late. but i just came across this collaboration a few days ago - and it’s arresting! credit goes to two remarkable figures of music: first is the label loaf recordings from london. second is the rather special arctic circle collective. the team around ben eshmade is a group of musicians, artists and promoters who love good music and support young and unknown...

i like jazz music. i like electronic music. i dont like either-ors.
having said that, let’s talk about some guys who might see this equally. first off is a wonderful four-men jazz group around sebastian studnitzky that calls itself portico quartet. they have been praised for their cool and uncomplicated yet unique and fascinating deep sound scapes. and i totally agree: their latest release...

say hello to robert.
robert’s a tire. an angry tire. and protagonist in quentin dupieux’ latest movie “rubber”. presented at this year’s cannes film festival, rubber is a movie about the adventures of an angry tire, rolling through the desert. and well, as if that is not enough, dupieux thought about a little special: robert (of course) has super psychodelic powers, it can explode objects...

warrior.
introducing: mr jose james. he escorted me through the day and im still listening to his vibrant sounds right now at my sofa. after his debut the dreamer on brownswood in 2008 mr james didn’t take long to present his follow-up blackmagic in 2009. he of course sticks with his patron and colleague, the legenday gilles peterson (classic). however after the cool, jazzy and acoustic sounds on...

beauty becomes the enemy of the future.
[…] things are best kept secret. To that extent […] is a world, and inside this world a […], and inside this […] a pulse, and where there should be […] said, nothing is said, nothing […] explicit about what this group is, where they are from, what […] do, why they do it, and […] you should listen to it.
wow. in a nutshell, that is pretty much everything you can say about Ian M....

sonne wird scheinen.
been talking about nina and gorje before. well, let’s get back to her:
“Heilstätten Beelitz is an abandoned hospital in the outback of Berlin, built around 1900. I had the idea of putting a gramophone inside. A tiny bit of life inside of these comfortless, dead walls.”
nothing more to add really.
nice one.

an eastern ambience
yep, i know it’s been a while since the last post. but here we go. today’s feature is stwory, a four-men band from warsaw, poland: abstract music somewhere between ambient guitar sounds, rhythmic patterns and electronic alienation. it’s kind of exertive from time to time, yet i cannot elude a certain refreshing and lulling sentiment when listening.
lately they seem rather...

come up for air
say hello to the white birch, a norwegian band around ole fløttum that has been playing together for almost 10 years by now. the song seer believer is to be found on their latest release come up for air, that has been released on glitterhouse in 2005.
this wonderful video however was shot on super8 and directed by eskil vogt. i admit, gazing little kids are kind of weird and use to freak me out...

the old days.

warm winter.
winter is back. so lets go north.
this is fredrik, a “dream folk” duo from sweden (what ever that means). they released their second album trilogi in january and i’ve been listening to it for a few months now - it still gets me: wonderful and kind of warm winter music fitting perfectly to the never ending cold winter weather of these days. very atmospheric, very nice.
sadly...

ok, it’s late.
but i have to share this with you. i found this video the other day and i’m still searching for the right words to describe it. unsettling may be one. touching also. intense, definitely.
it’s a modern dance performance, choreographed by gabrielle martin, the video has been directed by ivan rubio. it’s amazingly shot and produced. also pretty interesting...

“In the autumn time when the sky is a blank grey canvas I don’t wanna paint on it
Cause all those colors blind me spinning all around me round and round and round and round and round and
round and round and round”
blank grey canvas sky was released on fang bomb label in late 2009. it’s the outcome of the collaboration of rutger zuydervelt, better known as...

“Find the remains, start playing with memories. A retrogressive moment, while life goes on. We play endlessly.”
this beautiful video was created by german filmmaker nina mühlenkamp for the bova international festival of new images 2009.
not that it’s just perfect for a one minute interlude of your day. it even features the music of gorje hewek, a versatile and amazing...

i like data
today i happened to come across one of my favourite artists again: carsten nicolai creates stunning works, that move on the edge between art and science - in a way that is simply beautiful.
(and may be a little bit nerdy too;)
i just lost my self, exploring his creations and their stories. now i know:
i like data!
